Ironing and coriander

Mixed media print on recycled cans, plastic packaging, 80 x 30 (cm), 2020 by Lucy Oates

Artist Signature: yes

Ironing and coriander is a mixed media print on recycled cans and plastic packaging. I use my surrounding environment to inform my work, not just for it’s aesthetics, but the actual physical objects left behind. I often utilise waste materials, fusing them with traditional art techniques such as printmaking and embroidery. This has been an on going investigation in my practice and is how I came to develop my own hybrid printing and joining method involving aluminium cans and plastic packaging. The very action of using waste material within art is a comment on the current state of the environment, although I do not project this to be the dominating message. Instead I aim to celebrate the waste materials characteristic’s, rescuing them from the bin “dressing them up” to have new functions and appearances. This desire to utilise waste material, stems from growing up in a busy household of refurbishment. Family members would regularly return with items from the skip. This action of finding materials became ingrained in me at a young age, and could explain why I often ‘renovate’ waste within artwork.
